Team
Professors
Kevin Jan Duffy
Director, ISS
Research Chair: Applying Mathematics to Human and Natural Systems.
As team leader Prof. Duffy manages the entire Institute of Systems Science (ISS). His own research focuses on disease and ecological systems. He also interacts with all members of the ISS and their research.
Sibusiso Moyo
Professor
Prof. Sibusiso Moyo is Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies. Stellenbosch University. She has a PhD in Mathematics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Prof. Moyo’s research uses group analyses to study differential equations.
Megan Govender
Professor
Prof. Govender's research includes exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations, braneworld stars, black holes, strange stars, quasars, pulsars, neutron stars, inhomogeneous cosmologies and extended irreversible thermodynamics.
Paul Musonge
Professor
Current focus areas are in the modelling of water treatment systems and the production of biofuels using locally available bio-materials. Modelling involves the application of IoT, Big Data and Machine Learning.

Doctors
Kostya Zloshchastiev
Research Fellow
Dr Zloshchastiev’s research considers phenomena in classical and quantum physics, including the theory of open quantum systems, quantum optics, theory of gravity and physical vacuum, cosmology, astrophysics, physics of metals, geophysics, atmospheric and plasma physics. For these studies he uses non-linear and non-Hermitian Hamiltonian approaches.
Andronikos Paliathanasis
Research Fellow
Dr Paliathanasis’ research lies in the areas of gravitational physics, cosmology and in the methods of solving nonlinear differential equations such as Lie’s theory and singularity analysis.
Obiora Collins
Research Associate
Research has been primarily around applying mathematical models to issues in nature.
Thobeka Gumede
Postdoctoral Associate
Dr. Thobeka Gumede, is a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Institute of Systems Science. She holds a PhD from the University of the KwaZulu-Natal. She has worked on landscape and functional ecology, forest and grassland ecosystem functionality, and the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on community assemblages. She is heading up our research on preventing animal poaching using tracking collars on sentinel antelope.
Francis Mugabi
Postdoctoral associate
Dr. Mugabi is conducting research using the formulation, analysis and simulation of deterministic and stochastic models for population and epidemic dynamics.
Administration
Ms Samukelisiwe Nhlabathi
Administrator
Ms Nhlabathi oversees all administrative duties and co-ordinates all financial administration functions between Prof. Duffy and the Durban University of Technology finance department.
